Kids in the Know
A Coalition of Organizations Serving Children and Families

When legislation was first introduced in Congress that would destroy the ability of organizations to send direct mail to children and families, a few companies that would be put out of business by the legislation came to Widmeyer Communications for help. To deal with these issues, Widmeyer formed Kids in the Know, an alliance of three-dozen associations, nonprofits and companies that provide services to families and children. Organizations included groups such as the College Board, the American Council on Education, associations of college admissions counselors and publishers such as Highlights for Children, Grolier (Dr. Seuss), Sesame Street, and the Educational Press Association of America (EdPress). Using the alliance, Kids in the Know demonstrated how such legislative proposals would actually harm children - providing fewer kids with books and magazines, information about college and career opportunities, and other valued services. Widmeyer developed a grassroots campaign through Kids in the Know members and dozens of colleges, to send letters, make phone calls, lobby and testify on Capitol Hill and before state legislatures.

Results:
Since 1996, we have defeated successfully modified, or secured the withdrawal of a more than three-dzen bills in Congress and multiple state legislatures. Widmeyer continues to coordinate the Kids in the Know alliance and regularly provides legislative and regulatory updates to all members.
