The Business Roundtable
The Business Roundtable (BRT), founded in 1972, is an association of chief executive officers of leading corporations with a combined workforce of more than 10 million employees in the United States who are committed to advocating public policies that foster economic growth. Widmeyer Communications was hired by The Business Roundtable to assist its Education Task Force, which works to promote state education reform policies. In 2001, BRT became involved with federal legislation and the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The education community can be skeptical of business interest, so it was crucial to present BRT and its desired role in ESEA in a positive light. Widmeyer worked closely with the BRT and its lobbying firms to draw attention to a few key provisions in ESEA. Our Design and Advertising team created a series of ads and visually appealing one-pagers sent to the Senate and House staff providing information about the bill. And through op-eds, giveaways, letters to Members of Congress and media outreach, Widmeyer drew attention to BRT and their lobby for the reauthorization of ESEA.
Results:
The legislation passed with the key provisions BRT fought for. U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) had one of the ads enlarged and carried it to the well of the Senate for use during the debate on ESEA reauthorization. State Farm Chairman and CEO, Ed Rust, who also chaired the BRT's Education Task Force, found the ad series so inspiring he had the State Farm logo added and reproduced the ads for State Farm offices across the country.
